Therapeutic Arts Program

Hochstein School of Music & Dance

Rochester, New York

Program Description

In 2006, preparation began to develop a creative arts program for young adults with special needs to support their transition form school-based public education to adult life in our community. The Therapeutic Arts Program (T.A.P.) was then created and named. Through the power of the creative art therapies this unique program supports the continued development, skill training, community involvement, economic development, and enrichment of young adults with special needs (ages 21-30) within a safe, nurturing, and goal-oriented environment. Weekly programming is provided on a group basis and includes music therapy, creative art, creative dance, social skills group, chorus, instrument group, vocational/academic skills training, and an exercise and wellness class. Community connections involve offsite performances, volunteer job placements within the downtown area, and collaborations with guest artists and other community-based programs. Individual adaptive music lessons provide opportunities for music skill development on instruments that interest the student.
